A DIY Guide to Plasterboard Installation

Introduction

In the world of home renovations and interior upgrades, plasterboard stands as a popular choice for constructing smooth, durable walls that can be easily personalised with your choice of paint or wall coverings. Its versatility and ease of installation make it a favourite among DIY enthusiasts.

If you are in need of plasterboard for your next DIY project, Park Road Timber and Hardware has you covered. Installing plasterboard walls is a simple process, but there are still a few crucial things you should know before you begin.

Materials and Tools You Will Need

Before you get started, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools on hand. You will need:

  • Plasterboard sheets
  • Stud adhesive
  • Joint tape
  • Utility knife or plasterboard cutter
  • Plasterboard screws
  • Joint compound
  • Sandpaper
  • Primer
  • A screwdriver or drill
  • Spirit level

If you are looking to install a plasterboard ceiling or high walls, you will also need a plasterboard lifter. Having the right tools can make a big difference in the ease and quality of installation, so it is important to invest in good quality materials and equipment.

Preparing Your Work Area

Before installing your new plasterboard, make sure to prepare the work area adequately. Remove any old wall coverings and nails, and ensure the wall studs are in good condition and free from obstructions. A clean, smooth surface is vital to a successful installation.

How to Cut Plasterboard

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a seamless plasterboard installation. Measure the height and width of your wall to determine the size of the plasterboard sheets you’ll need. Use a utility knife to cut the sheets to size, scoring the board and then snapping it along the scored line. Remember to always cut on the front side of the plasterboard.

If you opt to use a plasterboard cutter instead, the process becomes even more straightforward and less messy. Align the cutter to your measured marks, and then push it through the plasterboard, creating a clean and straight cut. This tool not only ensures precision but also safety, keeping your hands away from sharp blades.

Installing the Plasterboard

Begin your installation at one corner of the room. Apply a stud adhesive in two or three blobs per stud to ensure a firm bond between the wall and the plasterboard. Adhesive not only helps to hold the board in place but also minimises the number of screws required. This also reduces potential weaknesses in the plasterboard.

Next, align the plasterboard sheet vertically to the wall studs. Use a spirit level to ensure the board is perfectly vertical before you start securing it to the studs using plasterboard screws. Screw into plasterboard panels with a distance of about 30 cm between each screw to ensure a firm hold, but start by placing screws at each corner to hold the board in place before filling in the rest.

Once the first sheet is securely fastened, measure and cut the next piece of plasterboard to fit snugly against the first. As you install each successive board, ensure there are no gaps between them, as a tight fit will make the taping and jointing process much easier later on. Continue this process until the entire wall is covered, always checking the alignment and fit as you go to ensure the best possible finish.

Taping and Finishing the Joints

Once all the sheets are up, it’s time to finish the joints to create a smooth, seamless surface. Apply joint tape along the seams between each sheet, pressing it down firmly to eliminate air bubbles. Following this, apply a thin layer of joint compound over the tape, smoothing it out with a trowel. Allow it to dry before applying a second layer, feathering the edges to blend seamlessly with the wall.

Sanding and Priming

After the joint compound dries, sand the wall to create a smooth surface, focusing particularly on the joint areas to eliminate any bumps or ridges. Wipe down the walls to remove dust before applying a primer to prepare the wall for painting. Priming ensures a smooth, clean canvas for your choice of wall covering, enhancing durability and finish.
